Yufeng Temple is situated at the southern foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and about 10 kilometers from Lijiang’s Old Town. Originally built in the last year of the Kangxi Region of the Qing Dynasty (1770), the temple is one of five significant temples in Lijiang. The temple is famous for its ancient forests around and “King Camellia”.
The temple once had nine courtyards, but only the main hall and two courtyards remain after various wars throughout the years. The whole complex of the Yufeng Temple shows a unique architectural style by combining together the features of Han Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism, Taoism and the local Naxi Dongba Religions. It is a historical witness of the peaceful coexistence and cultural communication over many years between different minorities and different regions.
Yufeng Temple was built in the last years of the reign of emperor Kangxi in Qing dynasty and it is one of the famous lama temples in Lijiang. The temple is small, but it was famous due to a camellia. There are three courtyards in the temple, the famous "camellia" rooted in the north courtyard. According to legend, the camellia was planted during the Ming dynasty Chenghua period (A.D. 1465-1487), there was the camellia first and then built the temple.
The best time to experience the ravishing views of Yufeng Temple is in late spring and early summer, because the famous camellia tree is in full blossomy during the period. It is said that camellia tree was planted in Emperor Chenghua's era of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and that is to say, the tree is older than the temple. The flowers of the camellia tree could bloom for more than 100 days, and there are altogether twenty thousand flowers bloom in 20 batches. The camellia tree is three meters (ten feet) in height and 34 centimeters (one foot) in diameter and the Lamas in the temple pleach the blanches of the camellia tree subtly into a 56 square meters (67 yards) flowery canopy. When stepping close to the tree, you find yourself plunging into an ocean of redolent and beautiful flowers. This "camellia tree king" has a history of more than 500 years. This camellia was made by two different species of camellia through grafting, 34 cm in diameter, 2 meters high, and the crown area of 56 square meters. From the front, it looks like a peacock in his pride.
