Introduction 

Located in between Xianglu peak and Luohan peak, Yidule village at least 14 miles from Luoping County in Qujing City, the waterfall covers an area of four kilometers. The terrain has changed due to natural effects of erosion and decomposition to create ten waterfalls of various sizes at the nine different levels. The highest waterfall standing at 58 meters high and is 114 meters wide dropping in the most deafening roar. Other neighboring waterfalls descend gently.

There are 10 waterfalls and each of them represents a dragon arranged on a valley with a total length of 4 kilometers and a depth of 200 meters creating the most stunning scenery. Thousands of years ago it is believed that Luoping was a big ocean inhabited by one white dragon and nine black dragons which continuously fought for the ocean. When the white dragon died the black ones stayed in different locations but one of them irritated people and this upset the gods of thunder, rain and winds forcing them to chop the ocean into steep pools and this is how the waterfalls were formed in a legendary way.

Major attractions and activities to do on a visit

The main spot attracting many tourists is the humongous waterfall at 56 meters high making way downwards in a sequence of streams and water pools making thunderbolt noises heard from kilometers away. There are also other subsequent waterfalls of varying lengths and widths all looking charming and peculiar and can all be seen from a belvedere. The second cascade also known as the Lovers Cascade stands at 43 meters high and 39 meters wide with a quaint pond beneath it.

During wet seasons the roar of the waterfall cascading can be heard from many kilometers away. During winter and spring, the cascade looks like a silver chain hanging from the sky and splashing spray into the air. On summer sunny days rainbows appear to form in an array of magical colors.

Hiking through steep steps is also a fun activity to get close to the nine dragons waterfall which breaks into many nice views along the route where you can pause along the way to see bamboo forests and the sound of water cascading. If you happen to be visiting in February or March you will also see Rape Flowers adding beauty to the greenery.

You can also be part of the Nine Dragons Waterfalls Festival held annually on September 16th. Witness how youngsters attend in huge numbers dressed up in their best costumes singing minority folk songs and dances testifying to the nine dragon culture. There is also a strange stone exhibition during this period and other festivals such as the Torch Festival on the 6th lunar month on the 24th day, the buying water splashing ceremony on the 3rd day of the 3rd lunar month and the antiphonal festival on the 2nd day of the 2nd lunar month. These festivals are great highlights.
