Jinma Biji Archway

Jinma Biji Archway located in the urban center of Kunming on the crossing point of Sanshi Street and Jinbi Road. The archway is 12 meter high and 18 meter wide with well-groomed architecture . Because it is close to Jinma mountain from the east and that is the reason got the name. Phoenix Archway is the symbol of Kunming. Phoenix Archway was built in Ming Dynasty and had a history of over 400 years.

When the sun is nearly down with the night glory glittering on the archway, the shaddow from the sun glory to the archway is faced on the eastern street, at the same time, the moon just arose from the east with silver glory gliterring on the archway, the saddow from the moon glory to the archway is faced on the western street. Both the shadows from the the moon and sun move closer and closer and unite finally. This is the the miracle of uniting moon and sun shaddow for every 60 years once. It is said in Daoguang Reign of Qing dynasty, it once happened. Because of the movement of sun, moon, and earth, every 60 years, the shaddow of moon and sun can unite once. The proper design of Phoenix Archway shows that the ancient people in Yunnan reallys has a high talent on mathematics, astronomy, and architecture. The old Phoenix Archway was destroyed in the cultural revolution and the current one was build in 1998 according to the originally architecture style.

Jinma Biji Archway is the symbol of city and culture in Kunming. It lies in the south to the central axis of Kunming. The archway from east is Jinma and the archway from the west is Biji. The two archway is about ten meters apart. Both archway are made of wood with flying eaves in gate tower style. After the Phoenix Archway was finished, they were destroyed many times. In 1884, it was renovated again by the local governor. The Phoenix Archway used to be one of eight old sceneries in Kunming and the current one was built in 1998.
