Introduction 

Just like its descriptive name, it is the point where the south running river turns northward within a one kilometer distance due to topographical conditions of a mountain range giving it a V shape. It is located 50 kilometers away from Lijiang and elevated at 1800 meters above sea level. Yangtze enter into Yunnan from the northwest direction where it meets Lancang River and Nu River forming the V shape. The river here becomes wide and the water flows slowly suitable for ferrying and growth of lush willow vegetation and trees.

According to history, it is believed that Lancang River, Jinsha River and Nu River are sisters who were travelling and couldn’t decide on where to go so they split ways and the two older sisters (Nu River and Lancang River) decided to head south but Jinsha River was more interested in finding love so she headed east. This is how they departed at Shigu Village but she was very determined to get what she wanted and later transformed into the First Bend of the Yangtze forming what it has become today.

Hiking and sightseeing

There are perfect hiking trails that look desert like yet rough and rocky. This is the same route followed by army troops 800 years ago making it very legendary.

The best place to view the first bend is from a special viewing deck constructed on the way from Lijiang to Shigu village located at number 308 provincial road from where comprehensive and grand views can be captured of the whole of Yangtze River. However, a not so articulate view of the bend can also be captured from Shigu village all together.

Learn about the history of the region

Learn of the long history of Shigu town from the memorial room of Red Army with a tall 8.1 meter monument. The relics on display there give out a clear description of the proceedings that took place centuries ago.

There is also another stone monument carved on white marble shaped like a drum in Shigu commemorating victory of power during Jiajin period in the Ming Dynasty between the Tibetan army and the Tusi of Mu Family of Lijiang. This marble stone drum has a queer character of rupturing prior to disputes then folding itself uo when peace prevails.

In Shigu Town exists a flourishing trade route for horses and tea between Tibetans and locals where you can find just about anything held every three days.
