Pingjiang Road, historically known as Shiquan Li, is the largest and best-preserved historical block in Suzhou, and is part of the so-called Old Town of Suzhou. The length of this narrow road is 1,606 meters, paralleling with Pingjiang River.

A BBC Travel article describes Pingjiang Road as less touristy than Shantang Street and states that it is "lined with houses that embody Suzhou’s style – graceful, simple and timeless. Pingjiang Road gives an insight into the leisurely existence of the city’s residents. (It is a) centre of Suzhou's artistic life, lined with bookshops and local opera theatres. There are also several teahouses, where people gather for performances of traditional storytelling and ballad singing".

Traced back to 800 years ago, the block was recorded as one of city’s main routes . There are eighteen stone bridges in the Pingjiang Road historic district, Among which twelve bridges (or in their previous forms) are shown on the Song Dynasty Pingjiang Map. The historic district thus has the highest density of bridges across Suzhou. Most of the bridges, each with distinctive bridge railing carvings, maintain their previous appearances of hundreds years ago under the government’s protection and renovation.

This block, with stone-paved alleys and water lanes intersecting, for many centuries has been a showcase of Suzhou historical culture, and it is a representative and symbol of native life.  Water-side residents, more often than not dressed in traditional Su-style garments, sing folk songs in Suzhou dialect to the passengers and tell folktales to the tourists.

Museum for Kunqu Opera

The China Kunqu Opera Museum is located in Mid Zhangjia Alley in this historical region, whose building was once Quanjin Guild Hall. The movable opera stage, decorated with white jade and glass lotus lights, is one of the gorgeous and graceful collections inside. Visitors can appreciate the kunqu performance, the classical Chinese opera, each Sunday at 2pm.

Museum for Pingtang

Regarded as one of three unique culture heritages of Suzhou together with Kunqu and Suzhou Classic Gardens,Pingtang, an elegant performance of storytelling and ballad singing in Suzhou dialect, is performed in the Suzhou Pingtan Museum each afternoon.

As a classic Chinese poem going, “bridges, running river, residents”, Pingjiang Street reveal a  scroll of typical Chinese ink painting in front of the visitors, which is interspersed with white walls and black eaves, aged punts and rickshaws. Numerous former residence of famous figures can be found in between, most of which have been remoulded into residential area though. Visitors may still feel flavor of the bygone days through every touch to the pillars and very glimpse at the beams It is honorably awarded the Asia Pacific Heritage Award for Culture Heritage Conservation in 2015.
