Introduction
The Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders, also called JiangDongMen Museum, is located at NO. 418 Shuiximen Road, Nanjing. It is built for mesmerizing the grievous killing in Nanjing after Japanese soldiers occupied this city from December 1937 to January 1938. On Dec 13, 1937, the Japanese soldiers did massive crimes including rapes, executions, looting, torture, bombing, slaughter, cultural plunder, robbery, arson etc, more than 300,000 of innocent Chinese people were killed and buried by Japanese intruders for six weeks, the dead body left on the street or even float in the bloody river.
Now the museum is listed as the national first-class museum, an important heritage site under state protection and one of three major tragic museums during World War Two. It records the most painful memory of Chinese people and also alerts the pain of the war to the world.
What’s to See
The museum covers an area more than 120,000 square meters and divides into four functional areas including exhibition, memorial area, peace park and communication.
Exhibition
The exhibition area displayed the thematic sculptures, such as the cry of the dead, flag tablet, wall of victims and peace bell, which describe the miserable scene that happened on that day. On December 13 every year, Chinese people gather here to commemorate the victims, ring the peace bell and issue a peace declaration.
Memorial Area
The area includes the large-scale sculptures, copperplate footprints, stone wall and a pit of ten thousand corpses and other important evidence what Japanese soldiers did to innocent civilians in 1937, such as the massacre photos, historical files, on-the-spot report, newspaper and book written by Chinese and foreigner people, survival victim’s name, their testimony and proof; even the Japanese soldier’s journal and confession etc. This evidence vividly reflected the grave disaster made by the intruders to Chinese people.
Peace Park
The overall peace park also called Nine Nine square for the reason that the Japanese surrender ceremony was held in Nanjing on September 9, 1945. It mainly introduces the victory of the anti-fascist war and the trial of Japanese war criminals in the Chinese theater of war and move forward and forgive each other.
Communication
This area is a comprehensive functional area integrating collection, communication and office. Its main facilities include lecture hall, library and special collection.
Note: The museum closes on Mondays. (Except Chinese major holiday)
