It is one of the largest museums in China. The museum has over 400,000 items in its permanent collection, making it one of the largest in China. Especially notable is the museum's enormous collections of Ming and Qing imperial porcelain, which is among the largest in the world.
Nanjing Museum
Nanjing Museum is located at No. 321, eastern road of zhongshan, district xuanwu, city Nanjing. Nanjing Museum is one of three biggest museums in China. Nanjing Museum was national central museum originally built by Cai, yuan, pei in 1933. Nanjing Museum was the earliest museum and the first comprehensive museum invested by the government. Nanjing Museum is a large scale state comprehensive museum and a comprehensive historical arts museum. Currently Nanjing Museum is a first class national museum, the first central&local built national museum, national 4 A tourist scene and a national key relics under protection.
The main building was designed by Liang Sicheng in the 1930s combining Chinese and Western architectural styles. The front section is structure of traditional style and features a golden tiled roof. In the back is a Western-style flat-roof structure. Added in the 1990s to the west of the main building is an art hall which show the building style of first half of the 20th century.
There are twelve exhibition halls at the museum. There are Qin Garden, Earthen Ware Hall, Treasure Hall, Folk Art Hall, Bronze Ware Hall, Ming and Qing Porcelain Hall, Wu Weishan Sculpture Hall, Ancient Paintings Hall, Modern Art Hall, Jiangnan Silk Product Hall, Jade Hall and Lacquer Hall.
There are some 30,000 calligraphy and painting masterpieces - including some from the Song and Yuan Dynasties are exhibited. Other treasures such as ancient painted pottery wares, bronze wares of West Zhou dynasty (11th century BC - 771 BC) and Spring and Autumn period (770 BC - 476 BC), the jade suit sewn with silver thread of Eastern Han dynasty (25 - 220), and the gold beast of the Warring States period and so on.
The Museum has incalculable treasure of art and culture, and a venue for a rich variety of activities. It is notable for holding special subject lectures. Further, it has arranged displays in countries as far apart as Japan and Germany. It encourages research in the fields of culture, folk customs, and traditions from other parts of China. Nanjing Museum has been regarded as one of the most advanced and popular among others of its class in China, and an important educational base for students.
