Chariot and Horse Pits is a magnificent discovery in 21st-century as important as Terracotta Warriors, which has the only Emperor's Chariot Drawn by Six Horses and a great source to learn the history of Eastern Zhou dynasty from its exhibition.

Chariot and Horse Pits

Located on the Eastern Zhou Dynasty Square of downtown Luoyang, the Museum of Chariot and Horse Pits of Eastern Zhou Dynasty is built on the base of the ruins of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty (770 BC - 256 BC).

The Chariot and Horse Pits has been discovered in Henan Province. It may lead to understanding Chinese civilizations that existed more than 2,000 years ago.The relics are dated more than 300 years earlier than the famous warriors in Shaanxi Province. These relics indicate that there could be a tomb group in this area, which is likely to be important for China’s archaeological studies. In ancient China, carts, sheep, spoons and so on were buried to ensure that dead people had a happy afterlife. The number and quality of the sacrifices indicated the social status of the dead. The discovered pit measures 10.4 meters long, 8.4 meters wide and 5 meters deep. It holds 20 carts in different sizes. The smallest one is 1.05 meters long and 1.3 meters wide.

In ancient China, horses and chariots were among the deciding factors in winning or losing a battle. At the same time, they were also luxuries enjoyed by kings, princes and aristocrats and the numbers of horses and chariots were a measure of their status and social position, serving as an important indicator of state power and individual identity. That's why even after their death, chariots and horses matching their status were buried in the tomb.

Covering an area of more than 1700 square kilometers, the museum is made up of two exhibition areas. The first one is divided into four parts with different topics, including The Plate of the Five Capitals in Luoyang, The Introduction of Royal City of Eastern Zhou Dynasty, The Exploration and Discovery of Imperial Tombs of Eastern Zhou Dynasty, and Cultural Objects o Eastern Zhou Dynasty. The second exhibition area of the museum is connected to the first one by a passage, where display the two of the 17 chariot and horse pits discovered between 2002 and 2003. The one on the north side is 42.6 meters and 7.4 meters wide with the chariots and the horses laid lengthways in two lines.
