Sangke Grassland
Introduction
Sangke is one of the most precious grasslands in China covering 70 square kilometers and rising to 3000 meters above sea level. It is located on the west side of Xiahe County in Gannan in the middle of the Tibetan Plateau near the precious Labrang monastery (one of the biggest monasteries in the word). The area has been one of the main stock farming bases of Gannan Zang and is also home to River Daxia which moves from south to north promoting luxurious and endless growth of wild flowers which blossom attractively on the great tableland under the blue sky creating a picturesque natural scenery.
Major attractions and activities to do on a visit
Admire the beauty of nature
Take some time by the lake where a small wooden bridge structure has be constructed to extend across the beautiful lake reflecting the blue sky with the backdrop of serene mountain ranges.
Horse riding and camping
This is the right place to appreciate Tibetan folk culture either by horse or yak riding or by playing dress up in the unique Tibetan costumes. If you happen to visit during summertime camping on the prairie is extremely exciting and you can enjoy the great fire dance at night and unique shows prepared by locals. But you can also opt to be hosted by a local family to get in touch with their nomadic life.
Savor local cuisine
A visit here is only complete after tasting local food like Tibetan glutinous rice, zhang bread, mutton and drinking the local milk tea and buttered tea.
Xianglang Festival
During summer there are a number of festivals including this famous Xianglang Festival (picking firewood). During this festival every monk will gather firewood and go to the fields to commemorate this special tradition that started back in the days when finding firewood was a hard task forcing everyone to walk for miles to collect a handful. In addition to that there are games, dances and songs involving making it even more charming. The festivities always start on the 6th of June of the lunar calendar and shouldn't be missed for those interested in experiencing the fantastic grassland lifestyle with the locals.
