Hecang Fortress stands as the best preserved fortress amongst the remaining military storages where people can commemorate history. It has been named as provincial level culture relics protection unit which was designed in a very concealing design never to be found in the middle of tall sand dunes hidden both on the north and south sides.

Introduction
Located in Gobi Desert 20 kilometers from Yumenguan Pass towards the west and 60 kilometers from Dunhuang City, this fortress was set up by ancient people during the Western Han Dynasty who built a quartermaster depot for supplies like food, granaries, clothes and wine for armies that guarded the Yumenguan pass, Yangguan Pass, Fengzhao and the Great Wall. The soldiers needed these supplies for survival and it wouldn’t be possible without the presence of the Fortress.
The fortresses has seen it all, the series of wars and prosperity and the series of peace and battle. There are three depots which are separated by two earth walls with each of them measuring 42.5 meters high and 6.7 meters wide. In addition to this, for aeration purposes there are a number of triangular holes on the walls which appear to be symmetrical to the walls in the south.
